There is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than an ice cold drink. Lemonade and ice tea are my usual go-to drinks but I thought I’d get  adventurous this summer and make something a little different. I’ve always loved how strawberry and lemonade go together but I decided to add one more ingredient for a little kick and the result is Strawberry Basil Lemonade and it is OH.SO.GOOD.

Here Comes the Sun: Strawberry Basil Lemonade

Ingredients for the Strawberry Basil Syrup
1 c. water
1 lb. strawberries washed, hulled and sliced 1/2 inch thick
1 1/2 c. Sugar
3/4 cup basil leaves

Ingredients for the Lemonade
2 cups lemon juice (from fresh lemons or you can use bottled lemon juice or frozen lemonade concentrate)
Ice
8 cups cold water
1/2 lb. strawberries washed, hulled and sliced 1/2 inch thick
1/4 cup basil leaves for garnish

Simple Syrup Recipe
Combine the sugar and water in a saucepan. Heat on medium high, stirring occassionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to a boil and add the strawberries.

Reduce heat to medium low and add the strawberries. Cook 10 minutes until the strawberries are soft.

Remove from heat. Add basil and stir to combine.  Let stand at room temp until cool ( about 45 minutes).

Strain through fine mesh into a small bowl. Discard solids.

For lemonade
Combine water and lemon juice. Add 1 1/2 c. strawberry basil syrup and mix well. If it is too tart, add more simple syrup or additional sugar to taste.

Add ice and garnish with sliced strawberries and basil leaves.

Delicious and Refreshing! The basil adds such a unique flavor.

  1. This looks and sounds really good – will have to give it a try. I always grow my own basil every year and have a lemon tree but no lemons yet – will have to wait on that. In the mean time I just bought a whole bag of lemons from Sams yesterday.

  2. Kelly I can’t wait to try this! I am pinning this to the Monday Funday Board and my own! Thanks for sharing! xoxo – Cheryl (and thanks for linking up with us!)
