This felt sachet ornament is easy to make and makes a great holiday gift.

I adore making ornaments and am always looking for new types of ornaments to make. A few years ago, I got a gingerbread sachet ornament as part of a gift set. I pull it out of my Christmas ornament box every year and take a big inhale and it immediately puts me in the holiday spirit.  This year, I decided to make a felt sachet ornament and am teaching you how to make your very own. This post is part of the 4th Annual Handmade Holiday Hop using Young Living essential oils. If this is your first time here, check out all the amazing essential oil holiday gifts that we made last year.

HOW TO MAKE A FELT SACHET ORNAMENT

SUPPLIES
1 piece white felt (8.5″x11″)
Snowflake template
Red and white bakers twine
Christmas Spirit Essential Oil
Uncooked Rice
Red embroidery floss
Needle
Scissors
Pins
Light box tracing tablet

First, let me start of by saying that I do not sew. There is a sewing machine in my closet and it is just a huge collector of dust. I cannot thread a needle to save my life. (I finally found a great trick for that that I’ll share below). My mom used to sew ALL.THE.THINGS.  She made my baby clothes, she makes quilts, she does cross stitch and needlepoint (I’m not even sure if those last two are the same thing or not).  What I’m trying to say is, if there is a sewing gene, it was not passed down to me.

That being said… I have been swooning over all these adorable sewn ornaments this year and I really wanted to try to make one.  I picked something relatively easy so if I can do this…you can too.  Okay.. here we go.

FELT SACHET ORNAMENT

DIRECTIONS

  1.  Print out this template and use the light box to trace the snowflake pattern onto the white felt. I used a thin black marker for this. If you don’t have a light box, you can tape the pattern and felt onto a window and trace it. Or you can also use the Cricut Maker to cut felt shapes. I don’t personally own a Cricut Maker but I know it cuts felt (and many other materials) easily.
  2. Carefully cut out the snowflake
  3. Cut out a second snowflake (no need to trace the design on this one, it will be used for the back)
  4. Stitch along the lines with red embroidery thread using a back stitch. You can learn how to do it here.
  5. Once the pattern in stitched, place the 2 snowflakes sides together, hold in place with pins and stitch around the edge, leaving an opening at the top. This felt sachet ornament is easy to make and makes a great holiday gift.
  6. Form a loop with the bakers twine and glue it to the inside of the ornament for a hanger.
  7. Place a small amount of rice into small bowl along with 3 drops of Christmas Spirit essential oil. Stir the rice so it is all coated by the oil
  8. Pour the rice into the ornament
  9. Finish stitching the ornament closed and you’re done! This felt sachet ornament is easy to make and makes a great holiday gift.

I love how my felt sachet ornament looks on my tree and it smells absolutely wonderful. It goes perfectly with the red and white theme that I have on my tree. You can make this ornament using any color of felt and any snowflake design that you want so if the red and white doesn’t work for you, feel free to swap it out. Blue thread would look great and so would blue felt with white thread.

You can also use any essential oil that you want.  I used Christmas Spirit but you can Cinnamon Bark, Balsam Fir, Pine, or Peppermint would work well too.

LOVE IT? PIN IT!
