One of my favorite ways to change the look of a room is to switch out the pillows.  I recently packed away my summer pillows and switched to Fall pillows.  My Fall pillow collection is growing but my couch still seemed a bit empty. I’ve wanted to create a stenciled pillow for a while so I made a Vintage Cycle Stenciled Pillow using FolkArt Stencils and Paints.

To make this pillow, I first created an envelope closure pillow cover. An envelope closure pillow cover is a great way to save some money since pillows can get quite expensive. Purchase a few pillow forms and create different pillow covers that you can remove easily. After creating my pillow cover, I placed a piece of cardboard inside it so my paint would not seep through onto the back of the pillow.  I used  FolkArt Stencil Adhesive to attach the stencils to my pillow cover.

The adhesive is repositionable and makes it easier to create perfectly stenciled projects. It dries clear, comes in an easy applicator bottle and cleans up with soap and water. FolkArt Stencil1® are made from laser cut mylar,  are durable, reusable and have lots of detail.

After attaching the FolkArt Stencil1 stencils, I used a stencil brush and a pouncing technique to apply the the paint to my pillow cover.

The key to stenciling is not to overload your brush. After you get paint on your brush, dab most of it off onto a paper towel. This prevents the paint from seeping under the stencil. Also, by having very little paint on your brush, you will achieve the vintage look. Dab your paint onto your stencil. I mixed black and white to create a custom grey color.  The paint will dry fairly quickly and I suggest removing the stencil before it dries completely so the stencil will not pull the paint off of the fabric.

This pillow now lives on my couch next to all my Fall pillows. Because the color is neutral, I can use it all year too!
