The BEST DIY Carpet Cleaner! Get your carpets CLEAN for cheap!

I have a home full of carpet. Nice when you want to get down on the floor with the kids but not so nice when it comes to cleaning stains. I’ve paid for professional carpet cleaning in the past but have found that this natural cleaner works just as well with no harsh chemicals. Want to know what it is?

Baking soda + vinegar = magic!

Yes! It is that easy. This combo cleans practically everything. I buy a big bag of baking soda from Costco and a big jug of white vinegar and it lasts me quite a while.

Here’s how to clean your carpet…

Sprinkle  a little of the baking soda over the carpet stains. 1 TBS per stain should be plenty. Then pour the vinegar onto the baking soda. Just a little splash of vinegar will do the job. You can also pour the vinegar into a spray bottle and spray it on. It will fizz and bubble. Let the mixture sit on the stain for a few minutes to do its job.  Then scrub with a clean white cloth or paper towel. Sop up the liquid and then let the area dry. When dry, vacuum to remove all traces of the baking soda.

Note that this method is for spot cleaning your carpet.  If you have larger stains or if your carpet is just very dingy and you need to give it a good deep cleaning, I suggest using a 1:1 solution of water to vinegar in a steam cleaner.

Your carpet will be clean and your wallet will not be empty!

  1. Perhaps one of the simplest carpet cleaning solutions to make is something that can be used in steam carpet cleaning machines. Vinegar and hot water in equal parts, instead of the strong chemicals usually purchased in stores, is an effective odor and stain remover for most carpets.

  7. Hi Kelly. I have used baking soda and vinegar to great effect in the past. I have found the cheap vinegar works fine for this. When I use this I usually let it set on the carpet for at least 20 minutes.
