My kids favorite phrase is “can we have a snack?”  We can get them to do most anything if we tell them that there will be snacks involved.

“We have to go to the home improvement store and look at cabinets all day long”
*whining erupts*  but then…

“Can we get a snack on the way?”

“Yes.”
*whining stops. All is good. Mom and Dad win*

I usually try to be healthy around here but I’ve got to get in a few sweet treats every now and then. And with Valentine’s Day coming up, these sugar cookies are perfect. The recipe is easy, the frosting is divine and the decorating is  always fun.

However, I have to be careful about the vultures  kids. They are super sneaky when it comes to sweets. The other afternoon I made the mistake of telling them that they could have ice cream for an after school snack.  They were doing a great job of getting it themselves so I left them alone and didn’t intervene.  They ate the entire carton.  The ENTIRE.CARTON.   And my husband and I didn’t figure it out until we went to get some after the kids went to bed and we found an empty carton in the freezer. So not only did they eat the whole thing, they put the empty carton BACK in the freezer. I seriously need a lock on the fridge.

But back to the cookies. Sometimes I like to go all out and go homemade and sometimes I just need a shortcut. Today is a shortcut day.  This recipe uses a store bought cookie dough mix.

Author Kelly

Ingredients

  • 1 bag Store bought sugar cookie mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 1 bag pink melting chocolates
  • sprinkles
  • flour

Instructions

  1. Make the sugar cookie dough according to the directions on the package. My package called for 1 egg and 1 stick of melted butter to be mixed in
  2. Place flour onto your rolling surface and roll out the cookie dough until it is 1/4" thick
  3. Cut out your cookies with a heart shaped cookie cutter.
  4. Bake according to the directions on the package
  5. Place melting chocolates into a microwaveable dish and melt at 50% power for 30 seconds. Stir and continue to melt at 50% for 30 seconds until chocolate is completely melted.
  6. Do not overcook the chocolate. If it gets too hot, it will harden.
  7. If the chocolate is melted but still slightly thick, add a few tablespoons of vegetable oil to thin it out. Do not add water.
  8. Dip your cookies into the chocolate and immediately coat with sprinkles

These cookies are so easy to make and the kids can help!  Package them up in cute containers to give as gifts or to display at your Valentine’s Day party or just keep them all to yourself.

There’s no such thing as keeping them all to myself in our house.  But they will be closely monitored for sure.
