HAPPY EARTH DAY!
In honor of Earth Day, we made this soda bottle bird feeder. I am so glad that I get to teach my children about the importance of saving our planet. By making this craft, we keep a plastic bottle out of the landfill. {We would normally recycle it anyway, though}. I first saw this craft here. It was linked up to my weekly link party.
This is super easy and fun!
MATERIALS
Plastic bottle
{I used a 20 oz. soda bottle}
Two wooden spoons
Sharpie marker
Craft knife
Scissors
Floral wire
DIRECTIONS
With a sharpie marker, draw a small circle on one side of the bottle about 4 inches from the bottom. Cut it out {using a craft knife} and make sure the end of the spoon fits snugly into the hole.
Directly opposite this hole, cut a slightly larger hole {using a craft knife and scissors}. Make sure the big end of the spoon can rest in the hole.
Repeat this process approximately 2 inches from the bottom of the soda bottle, but use the opposite sides of the bottle so your spoons are at a 90 degree angle to one another.
Screw the top on and hang from your favorite place.
How are you celebrating Earth Day?

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for this great & environmentally friendly idea! We have so many trees and so many birds in our new yard that my son just couldn’t wait to feed them. Very excited to do this with him :-)!
Happy Earth Day!
Hard learned lesson: Do not make round holes where the spoon part is. Make slits that are about 1/4″ to 1/2″ other wise when you fill it you will have bird seed flying out the holes. Trust me!
How do the birds get at the seed below the spoon? Seems like a lot of wasted seed to me. Great idea though that I want to try.
The birds can’t get to the birdseed below the bottom spoon. I would suggest placing the bottom spoon as low as possible to minimize the wasted seed.
Be sure to drill some small drainage holes in the bottom of the bottle too, and be prepared to empty the whole thing after a hard rain because the seeds in the bottom will rot/mold/germinate. It’s a cute idea, but sort of impractical unless a person is willing to maintain it.
Thanks for the tip, Sarah!
I’m getting my supplies together to make these right now with my children. Only, I plan to use screw eyes in the bottle cap and twine through there to hang them up. Thanks for the clear pics and I hope ours turn out so nicely too.
I hope you and your kids have as much fun making this as we did! Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for sharing your wonderful idea. It’s my favorite bird feeder now!
Now that’s very creative way to use soda bottle! Never thought it can be used as a bird feeder. I’m very impressed

Great idea !
what keeps the seeds from flowing out of the holes during filling?
You should make sure to cover the holes as much as possible during filling.
Hey Kelly,
I was amazed with how creative you are to do that. That’s awesome! Gotta try something similar with this too soon. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Cheers,
Oliver
Fantastic Feeder 🙂 … and placing holes and spoon on the bottom of bottle will feed even more Birdies, Wonderful 🙂
To begin with…..I would put my first Spoon at the very bottom….otherwise the food at the bottom will just sit there and become to old to consume because the birds won’t have access to the seeds……Second of all….. I would Glue the Spoons in place to keep them from moving away from the holes they are in because the seeds would just fall to the ground if the spoon moves outward away from the Bottle….. Thanks for listening to me….Good Luck and have Fun !!!?♥?♥?♥?
Thanks for the tips, Lydia!
