This red white and blue layered drink takes just minutes to make and will really WOW your guests.

Summertime is calling. And you need to answer.  When I was young, summer meant fun and lots of delicious cold drinks and treats.  Our summer treats consisted mainly of the popsicles that came in the plastic sleeve. You know the one… they were just liquid when you bought them at the store.  You brought home that huge package of like 100 and stood by the freezer just waiting for them to freeze enough that you could eat them.  My favorite part of the experience was when I would get to the last bit of the popsicle and it would be all melty. I would tip my head back and that glorious sugary popsicle “juice” would pour into my throat and down my chin.

THAT was summertime at it’s finest.  I love creating memories for my kids like making special treats that they’ll remember just like I remember those plastic encased popsicles. I’ve been eyeing these beautiful patriotic drinks for years but never quite understood how to make them. I’m a big fan of drink recipes but I had absolutely no clue how to make a layered drink so I went searching and found that it was quite easy.

The key to making this red white and blue layered drink is the sugar content of the beverages that you use.  The beverage with the highest sugar content will stay at the bottom  and the drink with the lowest sugar content will float on the top.  I was a bit skeptical of this but it really does work.

I knew that I wanted the red on the bottom and the blue on the top with the white in the middle so I chose cranberry juice, Sprite and Gatorade. Honestly, the sugar content in the Sprite wasn’t quite right for the layering effect which is why you don’t see a clearly distinct white layer. But I searched high and low for white drink that would work better and I just couldn’t find one. I’ve seen recommendations for Sobe Pina Colada for the white layer but my store unfortunately didn’t carry that.  After a bit more research, I found out that G2 Gatorade works best for the top layer because of it’s lower sugar content that regular Gatorade but you can use any blue drink with a low sugar content.

The second key to this drink is the ice. Your glass needs to be filled to the top with ice. Starting with the cranberry juice, pour your liquid into the glass SLOWLY over the ice. Try to make each layer 1/3 of the glass. Again, pour very slowly over the ice so the colors don’t mix.  I’ve also read that you can pour over the back of a spoon to make sure your pour is slow enough.  I would also recommend placing your straw into the glass BEFORE your pour the liquid. This way, you won’t disturb the layers if you try to put a straw in after pouring.

This is a non-alcoholic drink but you could definitely make a spiked version for adults if you wanted.  Just make sure that the alcoholic drink version is clearly labeled at the party so no one accidentally drink the wrong one.
