It’s that time of year. The “the kids are bringing home every germ on the planet” time or year.  The “please don’t sneeze in my face” time of year.  The ” I’m not leaving my house for fear of getting sick” time of year.  Just kidding with that last one.  Not really.  This smoothie recipe will combat all those sickies with it’s boost of vitamin C.

My kids love smoothies and I have to say I’m a big fan too.  The last few weeks, it’s the first thing that they ask for when they get home from school.  I love making these at home because I know exactly what goes into them and can regulate the amount of sugar.  But there is NO added sugar in this tropical fruit smoothie recipe!  Just the natural sugar from the fruit.

If fresh fruit is in season, I’d recommend using fresh.  But the middle of winter is not exactly the best time to find the freshest (and most affordable) fruit so I am using frozen fruit for this recipe.  The package of frozen tropical fruit at our local grocery store has strawberries, mango and pineapple but you can use any variety or tropical fruit.  Did you know that all these fruits have more vitamin C than oranges?

When making these smoothies, I have to admit that I’m not a “by the recipe” type of person. I kinda just throw everything into the blender, blend it up and then adjust to get the consistency that I want.  But I know that you all want an actual recipe so here you go.

Healthy Tropical Fruit Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1/2 bag frozen tropical fruit strawberries, pineapple, mangos
  • 1-2 cups milk
  • A few spoonfuls vanilla yogurt optional. You can also use a couple teaspoons of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Place all items into a blender and blend till smooth.

My kids seriously guzzle these down like there is no tomorrow. It’s a win for both me AND them.  They think they are getting an awesome treat, I can feel good about what I’m giving them AND I get the cool mom points for smoothies as an after school snack.

The one thing I will say about making smoothies is that since you have to blend things that are frozen, you’ll want to use a pretty decent blender that will do a good job. I currently have a small Cuisinart food processor. It does an ok job but it just takes a while to get everything blended. I would recommend something a little more heavy duty.
