DIY Beer Label Coasters

I love good beer.  Who’s with me?  Raise your hands high, people, if you just can’t get enough of good craft beer.  No Miller Lite or Bud Lite allowed. No, this is not a tutorial on how to make your own beer. I’m going to teach you how to make beer label coasters.

Remember those sticker books that you used to have as a kids?  The ones with the sticky pages filled with scratch n’ sniff stickers? Oh what I wouldn’t give to smell that Root Beer one again.  Or how about that one with the skunk? Ew.  Did you know that people actually still use those types of photo books?  Yeah, it shocked me too.  But people use them not only to collect and display photos but also to collect and display beer labels.

Now, I don’t need any more old school photo books laying around but I do like to remember the different craft beers that I have drunk.  So I decided to display the labels a bit differently on coasters.

DIY BEER LABEL COASTERS

SUPPLIES
1 piece 1/2″ plywood (the amount of plywood you  need will depend on the number of coasters that you want to make)
4-6 bottles of your favorite beer
120 grit sandpaper
Chopsaw
Rustoleum Stain in Kona
Mod Podge
Small furniture pads or felt
Paint brush or sponge brush

DIRECTIONS

CUT AND STAIN WOOD
Using the chopsaw, cut squares out of the plywood approximately 4″ x 4″

Sand the edges and round off the corners of the wooden squares using 120 grit sandpaper

Remove all dust from the wooden squares

Stain the top of the wood with Rustoleum Stain in Kona by brushing on one coat and then wiping off after a few seconds with an old rag.

After the first coat of stain is dry, add a second coat using the same technique as above

When the second coat is dry, turn the wood over and stain the back and sides.

TO REMOVE BEER BOTTLE LABELS
Place beer bottles in a steamer on the stove.  Yes, that beer is named Dirty Girl. Don’t judge. It does not reflect me in any way. It’s just good beer.

Steam for about 5 minutes

Carefully remove the bottles from the steamer and peel the label off

If label does not come off easily, place back in the steamer for a few minutes

Lay labels flat on wax paper or aluminum foil

ADHERE LABELS TO COASTERS
Place a layer of Mod Podge onto the wood coasters using a sponge brush or regular paint brush

Place a layer of Modge Podge onto the back of the beer labels

Place the label onto the center of the coaster and smooth with your finger to remove any bubbles

Let dry

After the Mod Podge is dry, add a second coast of Mod Podge over the label to seal it.  Add a third layer when the second layer dries.

Flip over and Mod Podge the back (only one  coat is fine)

Once dry, add felt furniture pads to each corner of the coaster on the back.

These beer label coaster turned out exactly the way I wanted.  I’m so excited to add them to our coaster collection.

These would be a great gift for a bachelor party, Father’s Day, birthday or Christmas.

And you don’t have to flip through an old sticker book to look at them!
