When we moved into our house, the garage was a selling point. That and a driveway. And if you don’t believe me, try living with street parking only and a gazillion steps to walk up with a baby in tow. Like I said, the garage in our new house was a huge selling point. “We have somewhere to park our cars now”, we exclaimed on move-in day. That lasted a whole couple days until the garage filled with piles of junk. The months (and years) dragged on, the junk piled up and we knew we needed to get organized.  My husband talked forever about building a workbench area to house all his tools. But it never happened. We both talked a lot about cleaning and organizing. But it never happened.  That is until our first soccer-free weekend this Spring we decided to kick our Garage Organization goals  into high gear.

YIKES! Needless to say, garage organization has become a top priority lately. We need a place for all the tools, fishing gear, scrap wood, paint and on and on. I was in Target the other day enjoying my alone time while the kids were at school and I picked up this FastTrack system to help with our clutter. You can pick it up at Target at a discount of 28.99 (regularly 39.99) between May 18-24.

So we got to work tackling the beast that is our garage. All the clutter on the floor that didn’t belong either got donated or trashed. The items that we used less often were put into the attic.  Be ruthless when decluttering and purging.  A good rule is if you haven’t used it in a year, it should go. One area of the garage that needed help was my garden area. Although I try to keep it organized, the big tools like shovels and rakes were just laying everywhere. The FastTrack made organizing these tools so simple. The system comes with interchangeable hooks so you can customize it to fit your needs. It’s also great  because it enables you to put hooks across the entire wall and not just where the studs are.  The hooks are also easy to rearrange if you need to switch up your storage.

Now my shovels, rakes and clippers have their own nice home up off the floor.

We also desperately needed a project work area so we put together this table and pegboard. We used bookshelves under the table hold the heavy tools. Now all the tools that were junked into big bins are all on display and easily accessible.

.My husband loves to fish. Most garages hold tons of recreational gear.  Consider devoting an area of your garage specifically to your recreational hobbies. We used an old dresser as storage for and he created this fishing rod holder.
